Scott Runion Sculptures

Pandemic

“Pandemic” was created during  the peak of the COVID pandemic. The composition consists of 56 line drawings of identical houses overlaid with a  concentric ringed target. This layout immediately evokes a sense of uniformity, monotony, and repetition through a traditional quilt pattern– alluding to the shared human condition experienced globally during the pandemic, characterized by isolation and the redundancy of lockdown life.

The repetition of the identical houses emphasizes the idea of universality; regardless of geographical location, the impact of the pandemic is largely the same. Moreover, the houses reference quarantine and domesticity with “home” as an image  synonymous with safety; yet, the houses are overlaid with a target implying the inherent risk everyone faced during the pandemic.

The sculpture should not be seen as COVID specific. Throughout history society has and will continue to encounter external threats. The target can symbolize abstract or as yet unnamed threats as well as a collective focus or goal, possibly the shared aspiration towards survival, resilience, and ultimately, a return to normalcy.

Hope and despair are simultaneously evoked through the bright yellow color. This is a color associated with both happiness and sunshine as well as danger and anxiety. The structure of the piece itself is like a comforting quilt in a traditional house block pattern with the added implied anxiety of a target.  "Pandemic" is a visual metaphor for universal human experiences and shared vulnerability regardless of the source. The abstract simplicity offers commentary, spurring reflections on commonality, resilience, and anticipation of overcoming crisis.
