Requiem

“Requiem" Is a steel line drawing that hangs in front of a white wall to allow for the changing shadow as light moves through the room. The image of a woman in a cathedral with a dead Stagg incorporates a combination of elements from religions mythology, and contemporary life.

The cathedral serves as a potent symbol of religious authority and a house of worship. The vaulted ceiling and circle serving as a rose window at the apse of the church is reminiscent of the gothic architecture style often associated with Christian churches. Rose windows have historically functioned as a source of light, illuminating the sacred space below. The moon-like circle in "Requiem" suggests lunar symbolism, which could be linked to the cycles of life, death, and renewal.

The huntress featured in this drawing alludes to the Roman goddess Diana. Diana is the deity of the hunt, wild animals, and wilderness. The presence of a woman with a hunting rifle, crouching behind a dead Stagg and holding its head up by its antlers, evokes the image of this goddess. In this context the rose window becomes the moon typically associated with the goddess Diana. The dead Stagg looks directly at the viewer, reinforcing the connection between the viewer, the huntress, and the dead Stagg. It is important to note, the Stagg was a representation of Christ in medieval art and litrerature.

It is essential to consider the title of the piece, "Requiem", which often refers to a mass for the repose of the souls of the dead. This requiem could be for the death of the Stagg, the environment, religious mythology or the general encroachment of civilization into nature's domain. The rifle points directly toward the moon, associating modern society and its disregard for the environment and ecosystems with the merging of ancient mythology and christian mythology depicting a type of sacrificial crucifixion.

Contemporary society continues to grapple with the consequences of rapid industrialization, urbanization, fragile ecosystems, and religious beliefs. By incorporating these disparate elements, “Requiem” invites viewers to evaluate humanity's relationship with nature and spiritual beliefs.
